Dr. Hani Sewilam, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, received a report from Engineer Abubakr Al-Roubi, Head of the Groundwater Sector, regarding the readiness of flood drains and protection structures to handle the upcoming flood and heavy rain season. The report reviewed inspections conducted in North Sinai to ensure the preparedness of these facilities. The ministry has implemented 1,648 protection structures including dams, artificial and mountain lakes, channels, barriers, protective bridges, underground reservoirs, calming basins, crossings, and spillways to protect citizens, cities, and infrastructure, as well as to harvest rainwater for use by Bedouin communities. Seasonal measures include regular inspections of 119 flood drains totaling 336 kilometers, with immediate removal of any encroachments. The ministry also operates a rainfall forecasting center that monitors rainfall amounts and locations three days in advance, sharing data via a WhatsApp group with all relevant ministries and governorates to enable proactive measures.
Additionally, water levels in canals and drains are lowered in areas expecting heavy rainfall to accommodate extra water volumes, and continuous monitoring ensures readiness of pumping stations and emergency units. Due to climate change and its impact on rainfall patterns, the ministry is updating designs for flood mitigation and protection works and reviewing the capacity of drains and artificial lakes at certain sites.
