Aswan Cancer Center hospital is included in the universal health insurance system scheduled to be implemented starting July 2025, following directives from President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and cabinet approval. The center provides advanced medical services, diagnostics, and surgeries using the latest technologies. It serves as a key healthcare hub for residents of Aswan and neighboring governorates and is one of the largest cancer hospitals in Upper Egypt, equipped with state-of-the-art medical devices and distinguished medical staff.

Dr. Ahmed El-Sebky, head of the General Authority for Healthcare and supervisor of the universal health insurance project, has ordered a comprehensive development of the center to become a fully integrated center of excellence for cancer diagnosis and treatment. Emphasis is placed on full digital transformation and daily on-site leadership presence to unify work systems and ensure high efficiency, discipline, and continuous training.

The Aswan healthcare branch continuously monitors quality standards and service levels within the universal health insurance framework. It oversees medical service regularity, patient care in inpatient and outpatient departments, adherence to quality standards by medical teams, and the availability of medical resources to ensure comprehensive healthcare services that meet citizens’ needs.

Dr. Mohamed Abdelhadi, head of the Aswan branch, confirmed the continuation of services after joining the insurance system and announced plans to introduce new services to enhance medical quality and expand patient care. Efforts are underway to provide the latest medical technologies to improve cancer patient care and diagnostic and treatment efficiency according to global standards.

The General Authority for Healthcare provided 2.8 million medical and therapeutic services during the trial operation in Aswan, covering all levels of healthcare from comprehensive medical examinations, accurate diagnostics, medication dispensing, to advanced therapeutic interventions and major surgeries. Services included over one million medical and laboratory tests, 400,000 emergency services, 100,000 outpatient visits, and 20,000 surgeries, with more than 45% being major and advanced operations.

These services were delivered through 8 hospitals and 89 family medicine centers and units across Aswan, equipped with the latest capabilities to meet health needs in all specialties. The system continues to expand with additional facilities being prepared for official operation.

Currently, 97 health facilities operate in Aswan, including 8 hospitals: Aswan Specialized Hospital, Specialized Ophthalmology Hospital, Al-Masalla Specialized Hospital, Abu Simbel International Hospital, Aswan Cancer Center, Kom Ombo Central Hospital, Daraw Central Hospital, and Nile Specialized Hospital, alongside 89 family medicine centers and units. The target is to reach 123 facilities, including 11 hospitals and 121 family medicine centers and units, all equipped to the highest technical standards to ensure safe, high-quality healthcare.

The Authority’s health facilities in Aswan provide primary, secondary, and tertiary care, including comprehensive medical examinations, radiology and laboratory services, outpatient clinics, emergency care, and precise and advanced surgeries, including major and skilled surgical interventions.

Twenty-two new advanced medical services and specialties have been introduced for the first time within the Authority’s system in Aswan to enhance medical service efficiency, activate the latest treatment protocols, and reduce the need for patients to travel outside the governorate or country for treatment, providing integrated and advanced healthcare close to their residence.

The official operation of the system in Aswan completes the first phase of the universal health insurance system across all governorates in Egypt, including Port Said, Luxor, Ismailia, South Sinai, Suez, and finally Aswan.
