Turkish Transport Minister Abdulkadir Oraloglu received a speeding ticket after posting a video of himself driving at 225 kilometers per hour on a highway, nearly double the legal speed limit, sparking controversy on social media. The video, set to folk music and excerpts from President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s speech praising government infrastructure, showed the speedometer rapidly rising as the minister overtook other cars on the Ankara-Niğde highway. Traffic police later fined the minister 9,267 Turkish lira (approximately 280 USD) for exceeding the speed limit about 50 kilometers outside the capital Ankara. Oraloglu stated on his official X account that he personally drove to inspect the current state of the Ankara-Niğde highway and unintentionally exceeded the speed limit briefly. He added that adhering to speed limits is a mandatory duty for everyone and that the gendarmerie took the necessary punitive measures against him.
He concluded by assuring the public that he will act with greater caution and attention from now on. The maximum speed limit on Turkish highways is 140 kilometers per hour.
