US President Donald Trump warned on Monday that there could be consequences if Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky do not meet. Trump also stated that although he did not discuss specific security guarantees for Ukraine, the United States will support the country. Potential security guarantees for Ukraine remain a major obstacle to ending the Russian war in Ukraine. Trump added that during his August 15 meeting with Putin in Alaska, they discussed reducing their countries’ massive nuclear arsenals once the Ukrainian crisis is resolved. He told reporters in the Oval Office, “We want nuclear disarmament. It’s an excessive power, we talked about that too. That’s part of it, but we have to end the war.” When asked why Putin hesitates to meet with Zelensky, Trump replied, “Because he doesn’t like him.”
