More than half a million refugees and displaced persons returned to Khartoum in July amid relative calm, following the cessation of fighting that has ravaged the Sudanese capital for over two years, according to the International Organization for Migration under the United Nations. A UN report on Monday estimated that 500,074 people returned to Khartoum last month, marking a 400 percent increase compared to June. The vast majority of returnees had been displaced within Sudan in camps or cities far from the fighting. The conflict between the army and the Rapid Support Forces broke out in April 2023 and quickly escalated into a violent war affecting the country.
