Greek police announced on Sunday that they seized more than 270 kilograms of cocaine valued at over 5.5 million euros (6.5 million dollars) and arrested three men. The cocaine was hidden inside a container of bananas imported from Ecuador. The UK’s National Crime Agency had informed Greek police that the cocaine would be transported on a ship headed to the port of Thessaloniki in northern Greece. Police found the cocaine and removed most of the drugs packed in brick-sized packages from the container before loading them onto a truck. They released a short video of the operation. The truck headed to the suburb of Aspropyrgos in Athens, over 500 kilometers south, where police arrested three men while opening the container on Saturday. The total amount of cocaine seized was 271.5 kilograms. The detainees include two Greeks, a 40-year-old transport company owner and a 32-year-old man, as well as a 47-year-old Bulgarian citizen.
The Bulgarian was in contact with a drug gang and organized the receipt and transport of the container. The 32-year-old was responsible for distributing the drugs through unnamed gang members. Police are searching for more individuals belonging to the drug distribution gang. The three arrested men will appear before the public prosecutor later on Monday.
