Politico reported, citing European diplomats and an informed source, that Finnish President Alexander Stubb may attend the meeting between Vladimir Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on August 18. CNN reported that U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, who previously had disagreements with Zelensky, will attend the August 18 meeting. European officials expect one European leader to join the Trump-Zelensky talks at the White House, though the identity of this leader is not yet clear. According to Politico sources, plans are underway to send at least one of Trump’s preferred interlocutors, Stubb, to accompany Zelensky when he travels to Washington on Monday to meet Trump. Stubb reportedly helped prevent a potential conflict between Trump and Zelensky by convincing the U.S. president to involve Europe in any future talks about Ukraine.

French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz are scheduled to hold another “coalition of the willing” video meeting on Sunday. Zelensky confirmed his planned visit to the U.S. on August 18 to meet Trump. Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump held talks in Alaska at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base. Their close talks, conducted in a “three on three” format, lasted two hours and 45 minutes. The Russian side was represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, while the U.S. side was represented by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the U.S. president’s special envoy Steve Witkoff.
