Cairo, August 19 (Petra) – The Arab League and the Arab Parliament have called on the international community to assume its humanitarian responsibilities towards Gaza.

The Chairman of the Arab Parliament, Mohammed bin Ahmed Al-Yemahi, affirmed that humanitarian work is a shared responsibility that requires more than ever the unification and coordination of efforts to enhance human solidarity in facing crises.

He emphasized that the role played by parliamentarians at the national and regional levels is a fundamental pillar to support humanitarian work through legislation and policies that ensure the protection of the most vulnerable groups, defend human rights, and mobilize official and popular efforts to support those affected by disasters and crises.

This came on the occasion of World Humanitarian Day, which falls on August 19 each year. Al-Yemahi pointed out that celebrating this day is an important annual milestone to renew commitment to noble humanitarian values and remind the international community of its moral and legal responsibility to protect humans and preserve their dignity in times of peace and war alike.

Given the current circumstances, the Arab Parliament called for mobilizing the greatest international humanitarian effort to relieve the Palestinian people due to the starvation and genocide practiced by the Israeli occupation against them.

Meanwhile, the Arab League called on the international community to bear its legal and moral responsibilities and to take urgent action to end wars and conflicts worldwide, save what remains of Gaza’s humanity, urgently protect unarmed civilians, and provide urgent humanitarian relief and assistance without restrictions or obstacles. Gaza must be in the conscience of the world because humanitarian work is incomplete without standing with Gaza by all possible means of support, relief, and advocacy.

The Arab League affirmed respect for the rules of international humanitarian law and the Fourth Geneva Convention to protect civilians and humanitarian workers from any assault or targeting, ensuring a safe environment that enables them to perform their noble humanitarian mission.

The Arab League highlighted the humanitarian catastrophe, the worst in our modern era, witnessed by the Gaza Strip due to the suffocating siege and starvation policy pursued by Israel, the occupying power, against more than two million Palestinians, amid the silence of the international community.
