The US Ambassador to Niger, Kathleen FitzGibbon, announced during the launch ceremony of the “Nexus Youth” program at the Mahatma Gandhi Center in Niamey, Niger’s capital, that the embassy funded this program with 280,538,117 CFA francs (equivalent to 500,000 USD). The Nexus Youth program will equip 400 young people from Niger’s eight regions with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to lead their communities, promote good governance, and act as catalysts for peace and progress. Over five days, participants will explore their civic leadership through seminars, field observations, and developing tangible projects. These young leaders will define their personal values and roles in building stronger communities and addressing their needs, including launching community initiatives and promoting responsible citizenship. The program does not require a specific educational level and ensures access to information and skills through training provided in local languages.
The US diplomat emphasized that empowering youth is a fundamental pillar in combating extremism and instability and that empowering young leaders drives prosperity and development.
