Cane sugar and corn syrup are among the most common sweeteners in foods and beverages. Despite differences in their sources and production methods, their effects are similar, according to experts. Both are added sugars, and excessive consumption can lead to negative health consequences such as weight gain, increased risk of type 2 diabetes, and dental problems. Although cane sugar is considered more natural, it carries similar health risks to high-fructose corn syrup when consumed excessively, according to Times Now.
Cane sugar, also known as sucrose, is extracted from sugarcane or sugar beet and consists of two simple sugars: half glucose and half fructose. The most common form is refined white table sugar. Some types also contain small amounts of micronutrients like potassium and magnesium.
Corn syrup is made from corn starch and mostly consists of glucose, which is then converted to fructose, making it similar to cane sugar in how it works in the body.
It is often used in soft drinks and contains more than 50% fructose and 45% glucose. Cane sugar contains 50% fructose and 50% glucose.
Both sugars are high in calories and lack nutritional value.
Experts say cane sugar and corn syrup are similar in calories, each providing about 4 calories per gram. Neither contains fiber, protein, vitamins, or beneficial minerals, so the body processes glucose and fructose the same way, using or storing them as needed.
Doctors say the liver processes both sugars similarly, converting fructose and glucose into energy or storing them based on the body’s needs, so it does not matter which one you use for overall health.
Studies indicate that corn syrup and cane sugar have similar effects on the body and offer no benefits. However, excessive consumption puts you at risk of:
– Weight gain
– Fatty liver
– High blood sugar
– Insulin resistance
– Heart problems
– High cholesterol
Doctors suggest reducing these sugars as much as possible in your daily diet and avoiding foods such as sugary drinks, baked goods, breakfast cereals, ice cream, and processed snacks.
