Diplomatic sources revealed that US President Donald Trump conveyed to his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders an offer from Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in exchange for Ukraine relinquishing the Donbas region, in addition to territories controlled by Russia in Crimea and the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia provinces.

The sources added that Zelensky rejected the request. Russia already controls one-fifth of Ukraine’s territory, including about three-quarters of the Donetsk region, which it first entered in 2014.

On Friday, a summit was held between Trump and Putin in Alaska under the title “Pursuit of Peace,” lasting nearly three hours.

Trump said Saturday evening that Ukraine must reach an agreement to end the war with Russia because “Russia is a very great power, and they (the Ukrainians) are not,” following the summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who reportedly demands more Ukrainian territories.

Trump added that he agreed with Putin on the need to seek a peace agreement without implementing a ceasefire first, as Ukraine and its European allies have demanded so far.

The Financial Times quoted informed sources saying that during his participation in the Alaska summit with Trump, the Russian president demanded that Ukraine abandon the idea of joining NATO and limit NATO’s eastward expansion.

In the same context, Axios reported from a knowledgeable source that the US side left the Alaska summit with the impression that Putin is open to negotiations regarding the Sumy and Kharkiv regions.

The source added that Putin requested during his meeting with Trump that the United States recognize the four regions and the Crimean Peninsula as part of Russia.

In a related context, the Wall Street Journal, citing European officials, said that US President Donald Trump informed European leaders of his openness to provide American guarantees to Ukraine.

The newspaper also mentioned that the US president insists that Ukraine cede lands in the east in exchange for freezing front lines in other areas, confirming that Putin expressed acceptance that any peace agreement must include the presence of Western forces in Ukraine to ensure its continuity.

The New York Times reported that “security guarantees for Ukraine” and “land swaps” between Moscow and Kyiv will be discussed during the upcoming meeting between Trump and Zelensky in Washington next Monday.

The report added that Putin did not oppose providing security guarantees to Kyiv but did not want these guarantees under NATO’s umbrella and did not object to the participation of US forces.

The newspaper pointed out that the guarantees proposed by Trump may include American military support for a European security force in Ukraine without committing to deploying US troops on the ground.

The guarantees, as described by the US president, included bilateral security commitments and financial and military support from a Western alliance including the United States.

NBC, citing senior US administration officials and three informed sources, reported that the guarantees will be activated if Russia launches a new invasion of Ukraine after a possible peace agreement.

It clarified that the guarantees discussed by the White House will not grant Ukraine NATO membership despite European leaders’ joint statement affirming Ukraine’s right to seek NATO and EU membership.

Since February 24, 2022, Russia has been conducting a military attack on its neighbor Ukraine and conditions its end on Kyiv abandoning joining Western military entities, which Kyiv considers “interference” in its affairs.
