US President Donald Trump announced that he will delay raising tariffs on Chinese goods due to Beijing’s purchases of Russian oil, indicating progress in his talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding ending the war in Ukraine.

Trump explained in an interview with Sean Hannity on Fox News, following his summit with Putin: “Because of what happened today, I don’t think I need to think about that (raising tariffs on China) now. Maybe I’ll reconsider it in two or three weeks, but for now, there’s no need.”

Earlier this month, Trump threatened to impose additional tariffs on Russian energy importers to pressure Putin into peace talks with Ukraine, and he actually doubled tariffs on Indian products to 50% starting August 27 due to their purchases of oil from Moscow.

However, a similar move against China could threaten the trade truce that Trump agreed to extend by 90 days on Monday. Under this agreement, Washington and Beijing reduced mutual tariffs on some goods after they reached record levels last spring, which worried global markets.

China defended its imports of Russian oil as legal and necessary for its energy security.

Trump did not reach a ceasefire agreement with Putin during their meeting in Alaska, but he said they agreed on many points and urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to reach an agreement with the leader who launched a war against his country in 2022.

Trump said in the Fox News interview: “I think the meeting went well.”
