US President Donald Trump told European leaders on Saturday that his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin “prefers a comprehensive agreement to end the war with Ukraine” and does not want a temporary ceasefire, according to an Axios correspondent citing a source in Trump’s call. Trump added during the call following a summit with Putin in Alaska: “I think a quick peace agreement is better than a ceasefire.” Trump held phone calls with NATO European leaders, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and a “lengthy call” with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. After the call, Zelensky said the phone call with Trump “lasted more than an hour and a half,” adding he would visit Washington on Monday to meet the US president. Zelensky emphasized Ukraine’s readiness for constructive cooperation and said Europe must be part of the talks at all stages, expressing support for a trilateral meeting.

The phone call discussed “positive signals” from Washington regarding security guarantees. Earlier on Friday, after talks with Putin in Alaska, Trump said he advised Zelensky to make a deal with Russia to end the war. A Kremlin official said the topic of a trilateral summit between the Russian, American, and Ukrainian presidents “has not been discussed yet,” according to Russian news agency TASS. The Kremlin added that “there is no knowledge yet of a date for another meeting between Putin and Trump.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced he would visit Washington on Monday to discuss “details of ending the war with Russia” following the Trump-Putin summit in Alaska.

Trump said on Friday after meeting Putin that he would not have to consider imposing counter-tariffs on countries buying Russian oil currently but might have to “within two or three weeks.” Trump mentioned that Zelensky and Putin would hold a meeting to try to reach a ceasefire to end the Russian war in Ukraine.

He added in an interview with Sean Hannity of Fox News after the Alaska meeting: “Now, it’s really up to President Zelensky to get it done… I’d also say European countries should get involved a little, but it’s up to President Zelensky… and if they want, I’ll be at the next meeting.” He continued: “They are setting up a meeting now between President Zelensky, President Putin, and me, I believe.” The Alaska summit between the US and Russian presidents lasted more than two and a half hours and was described as “fruitful,” although their statements did not confirm a full agreement on the war in Ukraine.
