US President Donald Trump expressed optimism about holding a “constructive” meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday. Trump said in a press conference, “I will talk to Vladimir Putin and tell him: You must end this war,” indicating his desire for a quick ceasefire. However, Trump also expressed being “somewhat annoyed” by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s statement that he needs constitutional approval for any territorial concessions. Trump’s team places great importance on the “Alaska Summit” to be similar to the “Yalta Conference” held by President Franklin Roosevelt with Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, which shaped post-World War II Europe. Meanwhile, EU foreign ministers held an emergency meeting yesterday in support of Kyiv, while Berlin announced another virtual meeting to be held tomorrow between President Trump and leaders of major European countries and Ukraine.
