The appearance of the Suhail star among Arabs is associated with a series of climatic changes and natural phenomena indicating the gradual easing of extreme heat and the moderation of weather. Arabs have long said: “When Suhail rises, the night cools,” indicating a drop in nighttime temperatures and the beginning of the end of the hot season. Suhail, the second brightest star after Sirius, is visible in the southeastern horizon before dawn starting August 24 in central Arabian Peninsula, appearing earlier in southern regions than northern ones. Its rising coincides with the “Duroor calculation,” which monitors environmental and climatic changes during this period, such as the coolness of water and earth at dawn, soil retaining moisture when watered in the evening, reduced water needs of camels, greening of acacia trees from the south, and the arrival of some sea birds like the Salal bird.
These are all signs of the seasonal climatic transition. Ibrahim Al-Jarwan, Chairman of the UAE Astronomy Society and member of the Arab Union for Space and Astronomy Sciences, stated that the Suhail rising period is an important astronomical and climatic milestone in Arab culture, marking the start of preparations for the new agricultural season and the trimming of sheep hooves by herders to maintain flock health. Fishermen also watch this period as fish approach the coasts due to cooling waters, and the “Safri” season begins, the first climatic season in the Arab calendar, associated with weather moderation and anticipation of beneficial rains. This time also coincides with “Awan Al-Qafal,” the return of pearl fishing boats in the Arabian Gulf, marking the end of the major diving season in mid-September.
Al-Jarwan confirmed that these signs, passed down through generations, remain significant in popular heritage, forming a living link between humans and the environment.
