The World Health Organization announced on Thursday that the Gaza Strip recorded in July 2025 the highest monthly rate of severe malnutrition among children, coinciding with rising deaths related to hunger. The WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, stated from Geneva headquarters that about 12,000 children under five were diagnosed with severe malnutrition last month, the highest monthly figure recorded so far. Approximately 2,500 of these children are in critical condition, while 99 people have died since the beginning of the year until June 29. WHO representative in the Palestinian territories, Rick Barberkorn, via video call, confirmed that food supplies remain insufficient to prevent the worsening crisis, calling to “flood the market” with aid and provide dietary diversity to meet the basic needs of the population.

Meanwhile, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced that among 136,000 children aged 6 months to 5 years examined in July by relief organizations in Gaza, 11,877 children (11.4%) were diagnosed with severe malnutrition, the highest monthly number recorded so far. The humanitarian and food crisis in Gaza continues amid the siege and shortage of food and medical supplies, with severe famine overlapping with a genocide war waged by Israel since October 7, 2023.
