The French Constitutional Council on Thursday rejected the government’s attempt to reuse a banned pesticide. The center-right government led by Prime Minister François Bayrou had pushed a controversial legislative amendment in early July to legalize the substance “Acetamiprid,” a pesticide demanded by hazelnut and sugar beet farmers in particular. A petition submitted by master’s student Eulnor Patri (23 years old) on July 10 sparked significant opposition, with two million signatures against the bill. The Élysée Palace stated that President Emmanuel Macron was informed of the Council’s decision and will implement the amendment without the pesticide-related provision. The court ruled that reusing the substance, banned since 2018, violates the country’s environmental charter. The pesticide, considered by critics as a “bee killer” and a serious threat to biodiversity, was authorized for use at the EU level until 2023.
