Palestinian political analyst Dr. Maher Safi confirmed that the Sharm El-Sheikh agreement to halt the war in the Gaza Strip represents a “sustainable truce” that is fundamentally different from previous agreements. He considered the summit’s convening and the attendance of U.S. President Donald Trump as a “political mandate” for President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to manage the peace file in the region.
In an intervention with Extra News channel, Safi praised the Egyptian diplomatic efforts that led to this achievement, saying: “Egypt and its political leadership have a high foresight for the future. What we see today is the result of the Egyptian vision presented at the Cairo Peace Summit on October 21, which stood as a strong barrier against displacement plans.” He added that Egypt did not just act as a mediator but as an “active state” that succeeded in breaking the “international bankruptcy barrier” regarding the entry of humanitarian aid.
Safi explained that the presence of this international momentum, including countries that changed their positions like France, represents an international guarantee for implementing the agreement. He pointed out that President Trump’s participation, despite his preoccupation with other international issues such as the war in Ukraine and the economic conflict with China, confirms his recognition that Egypt is the key to the solution and his desire to end the conflict in the Middle East.
Safi expected the agreement to be implemented on the ground but warned of possible obstacles from the Israeli side. He emphasized that the success of the next phase requires a unified political will from all parties, calling on Palestinian factions to unite behind a common vision, affirming that this summit may be the “last chance” to establish peace and return to the two-state solution based on the pre-1967 borders.
