Russia praised on Saturday the peace agreement mediated by the United States between Azerbaijan and Armenia, but warned that external intervention could complicate the situation in the South Caucasus.

The agreement was concluded on Friday during a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump and included exclusive rights for the United States to develop a transport corridor through Armenia linking Azerbaijan to the Nakhchivan region, an enclave bordering Turkey.

In its first comment, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Moscow supports efforts to enhance stability and prosperity in the region, including the meeting held in Washington, despite previous statements from Azerbaijan and Armenia favoring direct talks without intermediaries.

The ministry added that regional countries should work towards lasting solutions supported by neighbors such as Russia, Iran, and Turkey.

The ministry said, “The involvement of non-regional parties should strengthen the peace agenda, not create new divisions,” adding it hopes to avoid the “unfortunate experience” led by the West in resolving conflicts in the Middle East.
