The Second Terrorism Circuit convening at Badr Courts Complex is set to hear the trial of 64 defendants today, accused of joining a terrorist group and smuggling terrorists abroad, in the case known as the “New Cairo Cell.”
The session is chaired by Judge Wagdy Abdel Moneim with judges Abdel Galil Miftah and Diyaa Amer, and secretary Mohamed Hilal.
The defendants are being tried in case number 6518 of 2023, registered as 1660 of 2022 with State Security and 2000 of 2023 New Cairo.
Article 12 of the Anti-Terrorism Law specifies the penalty for establishing or managing a terrorist group, which can reach the death penalty. It states: “Anyone who establishes, organizes, manages, or leads a terrorist group shall be punished by death or life imprisonment.”
Anyone who joins or participates in a terrorist group with knowledge of its purposes shall be punished by severe imprisonment. The penalty is at least ten years if the offender receives military, security, or technical training within the terrorist group to achieve its goals, or if the offender is a member of the armed forces or police. Life imprisonment is also prescribed for anyone who coerces or forces another person to join the terrorist group.
