US President Donald Trump confirmed that the war in Gaza has ended and that the ceasefire agreement will hold, describing his visit to the region as historic and remarkable.

Responding to reporters’ questions during his trip to Israel and then Egypt aboard the presidential plane about whether he was confident the war in Gaza was over, he said, “The war is over. Okay? Do you understand?”

Trump described Gaza as looking like a demolition site and reiterated that a “peace council” will be quickly formed for Gaza.

He praised Qatar for its role in the agreement and stated that the United States and Israel stand on the threshold of one of the greatest diplomatic achievements in history.

Trump is scheduled to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the Knesset, then meet families of prisoners before heading to Egypt to sign the agreement to end the war in Gaza.

US Vice President J.D. Vance said Trump plans to receive “hostages” during his visit to Israel on Monday, adding there are no plans to send ground troops to Gaza or Israel.

The plan includes ending the war and releasing 47 hostages in Gaza, 20 of whom Israel believes are still alive, as well as the remains of a hostage held since 2014. In return, Israel will release 250 Palestinian prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment and 1,700 detainees from Gaza held since the war began.
