Seismologists in the Philippines recorded 824 aftershocks within 24 hours after two strong earthquakes struck the Davao Oriental province on Friday.
Teresito Bacolcol, director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, said the aftershocks were caused by the two earthquakes that occurred off the province— a 7.4 magnitude quake off the coast in the morning, followed by a 6.8 magnitude quake early in the evening, according to the Philippine newspaper The Star on Saturday.
He added, “As of 10 a.m., we have recorded 824 aftershocks in Davao.”
The strongest aftershock so far measured 5.8 magnitude, while six other aftershocks registered above 5 magnitude, one of which caused the ground to shake with a force of four in nearby areas.
He noted that the series of aftershocks were all concentrated in the same area.
Meanwhile, the death toll from the two earthquakes in southern Philippines rose to seven people, with over 300 injured, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council and local officials on Saturday.
More than 200,000 people were affected by the two earthquakes, measuring 7.4 and 6.8 on the Richter scale, which struck off the city of Manay in Davao Oriental province, about 1,000 kilometers south of Manila, 12 hours apart on Friday.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported three deaths in the city of Mati, including a woman who died after a wall collapsed in her home.
Two miners were reported killed in the town of Pantukan, while one person died each in the city of Davao and the town of Tarragona.
Most of the injured suffered bruises and shocks from falling debris, while many experienced hyperventilation and fainting, including students who were at school when the first earthquake struck at 9:43 a.m. (0143 GMT), with the second earthquake occurring at 7:12 p.m.
