The Norwegian Nobel Committee today, Friday, awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, according to Cairo News.
In a statement published on the official Nobel Prize website, the Norwegian committee said this honor was in recognition of her relentless work to promote democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and her struggle to achieve a fair and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.
The committee confirmed that “Machado” is considered one of the most outstanding examples of civil courage in Latin America recently, noting that she was a key and unifying figure within a deeply divided opposition, successfully finding common ground to demand free elections and representative government.
According to Reuters, the committee’s decision focused on the situation in Venezuela in a year dominated by repeated public statements from U.S. President Donald Trump, who claimed he deserved the prize. Experts had indicated before the announcement that Trump would not receive it because he works to dismantle the existing international system valued by the Nobel Committee.
The committee stated that democracy is a fundamental condition for lasting peace, and choosing Machado comes at a time when democracy is declining worldwide.
The committee confirmed that Maria Corina met the three criteria of Alfred Nobel’s will by uniting the opposition ranks and supporting a peaceful transition to democracy.
The Nobel Peace Prize, valued at 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately 1.2 million USD), is scheduled to be awarded in Oslo on December 10, the anniversary of the death of the prize founder, Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel.
