A senior United Nations official announced today, Thursday, that the international organization plans to intensify the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip during the first sixty days of the ceasefire in the area, just hours after an agreement was reached between Israel and the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas).

The agreement is expected to come into effect 24 hours after the Israeli government meeting today. The agreement will allow fleets of trucks loaded with food and medical aid to enter Gaza, enable the release of hostages in Gaza, and allow partial withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Palestinian territory.

Tom Fletcher, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, said: “We aim to increase the supply line to hundreds of trucks daily.”

He added: “We will work to expand the provision of food supplies throughout Gaza to reach 2.1 million people in need of food aid and nearly 500,000 in need of nutrition.”

Fletcher continued during a briefing: “Famine must be eliminated in areas where it has spread and prevented in others.”
