The U.S. Department of Justice announced on Thursday that criminal charges including bank fraud were filed against New York Attorney General Letitia James, a longtime opponent of President Donald Trump.
This comes as the U.S. administration seeks to use its powers against those involved in investigations related to Trump or who openly opposed his agenda.
U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, Lindsay Halegan, said James was charged with one count of bank fraud and one count of submitting false information to a lending institution. The Department of Justice has been investigating mortgage fraud allegations against her for some time.
Halegan stated, “The charges in this case represent deliberate criminal acts and serious breaches of public trust.”
Each charge carries a potential sentence of up to 30 years in prison.
James denied the validity of the charges, calling them baseless.
During his election campaign, Trump frequently vowed revenge after facing numerous legal crises since the end of his first term in 2021.
The Republican president has directed many accusations at James on social media and at political rallies, considering her an enemy of the party.
James is one of several Democratic prosecutors who have filed lawsuits to block actions taken by the Trump administration.
She became known for filing a civil fraud case against Trump and his family real estate company in 2022. The case resulted in a $454.2 million fine against Trump after the judge found he had inflated his net worth through fraud to deceive lenders.
