US President Donald Trump announced he might visit Egypt next Sunday to oversee a potential agreement to end the “Gaza war,” following clear progress in negotiations held in Sharm El-Sheikh between Hamas and Israel to halt the ongoing aggression against Gaza for over two years.
Trump told White House reporters that the agreement between Israel and Hamas regarding Gaza is “very close,” noting that the negotiations are going very well with a great opportunity to establish peace in the Middle East.
An American delegation joined the talks to develop an implementation mechanism to end the war, with participation from the Islamic Jihad Movement and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. In the coming hours, Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, and Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin are set to join.
The negotiations focus on the withdrawal of occupation forces from Gaza and prisoner exchanges, with Hamas emphasizing the need for guarantees to end the war permanently. Meanwhile, the Israeli Prime Minister expressed support for Trump’s plan aiming to return all abductees, eliminate Hamas rule, and ensure Gaza no longer poses a threat to Israel.
Simultaneously, many cities worldwide have witnessed massive demonstrations calling for an end to the war and lifting the siege on Gaza. The Spanish parliament approved a law banning arms supplies to Israel in an effort to curb what it described as genocide in Gaza.
The Israeli aggression has resulted in the deaths of at least 67,183 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, considered reliable by the United Nations, while 1,219 Israelis have been killed, according to official Israeli figures compiled by AFP.
