Morouj Mohammed Shaheeni, Social Worker ShMrooj@ In recent years, medical research has advanced in understanding the nature and treatment methods of “breast cancer.” Treatment is no longer limited to chemotherapy or surgery; more precise and effective methods have emerged to suit each patient’s specific condition. Treatment is determined based on the tumor’s nature, genetic factors, and the patient’s health status. These developments have helped make the treatment journey shorter and less painful, increased recovery rates, and reduced the chances of recurrence.

Alongside medical treatment, patients undergo a difficult psychological and social experience that can be harsher than the treatment itself. Here, the social worker plays a fundamental role in the care team by providing psychological, humanitarian, and social support. They listen to the patient, reassure her, accompany her during moments of weakness, help restore her psychological and social balance, explain her illness in a simplified way, guide her on how to deal with treatment and its effects, and coordinate with doctors and nursing staff to achieve the best possible care.

The social worker’s role does not stop there; it extends to supporting family members, especially children and the husband, and assisting with administrative matters such as obtaining medical leave, financial support, or even coordinating with charitable organizations if needed.

The success of breast cancer treatment depends not only on medications and technologies but on the integration of efforts between early detection, medicine, and psychological and social support. A patient who finds someone who understands and supports her psychologically overcomes many obstacles and gains greater strength to face the disease. Therefore, the social worker is an essential part of the comprehensive treatment system that targets the person in all dimensions.
