An American scientific study has revealed a dangerous new aspect of brain cancer, showing new severe effects associated with glioblastoma, one of the most aggressive types of brain cancer.
According to researchers at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the US, they discovered that glioblastoma is not confined to the brain only but also attacks the skull bones and disrupts the immune system. They found that this type of tumor causes skull bone fragility and expansion of the channels connecting it to the brain, allowing inflammatory cells to move from the bone marrow toward the tumor, increasing its aggressiveness and resistance to treatment.
They also found a significant imbalance in immune cells, with elevated numbers of neutrophils and almost disappearance of B cells responsible for immune defense, which explains the weak effectiveness of traditional treatments that focus only on the brain.
The study concluded that this tumor grows rapidly and fights the body’s immune system, affecting the entire body, not just the brain, and future treatment strategies should consider its effects on both bones and the immune system.
