The European Union announced on Monday the reimposition of sanctions on Iran due to its activities related to nuclear weapons proliferation, which had been suspended with the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2015.
The Brussels decision came after the UN Security Council voted not to extend the lifting of sanctions on Tehran, following the European troika (France, Germany, and the United Kingdom) invoking the “snapback” mechanism stipulated in the JCPOA.
The reimposed sanctions today include all measures previously adopted by the UN Security Council since 2006, including travel and asset sanctions, such as travel bans on individuals, freezing assets of listed individuals and entities, and prohibiting the provision of funds or economic resources to those on the lists.
The European Union also imposed economic and financial sanctions covering trade, finance, and transport sectors, including bans on the import, purchase, and transport of crude oil, natural gas, petrochemical and oil products, and related services; bans on selling or supplying key equipment used in the energy sector; bans on gold, other precious metals, and diamonds; as well as bans on certain maritime equipment and some software.
In the financial sector, the EU re-froze the assets of the Central Bank of Iran and major Iranian commercial banks.
It also reinstated measures preventing Iranian cargo flights from accessing EU airports and banned maintenance or servicing of Iranian aircraft or ships carrying prohibited goods or materials.
