The Middle East is currently going through a difficult period, especially after the events of October 7, 2023, and the ensuing developments related to the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, and Palestinians in the West Bank in general.
His Majesty King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein delivered a clear and firm speech at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, focusing prominently on the regional conflict, Gaza, and its repercussions, particularly the suffering of the Palestinian people due to this war. He also emphasized the importance and central role of the Hashemite custodianship over the Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.
On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meetings, a gathering was held between U.S. President Donald Trump and leaders of Arab and Islamic countries. Subsequently, His Majesty King Abdullah II met with former Jordanian prime ministers at Al-Husseiniya Palace in Amman to discuss the key outcomes of the 80th UN summit and the various meetings and encounters during His Majesty’s visit to New York.
His Majesty affirmed that Jordan will always be ready to protect the Hashemite Kingdom and national security. He explained that the purpose of the meeting was to clarify the results of his New York visit, describing it as successful. He pointed out important aspects, notably that Jordan always works with Arab brothers and all global partners on the details of a comprehensive plan to stop the war in Gaza.
A highly important meeting took place with U.S. President Donald Trump and leaders of some Arab and Islamic countries regarding Gaza, followed by a joint statement from leaders of some Arab and Islamic countries and members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. The statement focused on the tragic and unbearable situation in Gaza, especially the humanitarian disaster and heavy human losses resulting from the war.
The joint statement emphasized the countries’ rejection of forced displacement and the necessity to allow the return of Gazans who left the sector. The leaders stressed the urgency to end the war and achieve an immediate ceasefire, which would lead to the release of all detainees from both sides and allow sufficient humanitarian aid to enter. These points are fundamental conditions for achieving a just and lasting peace.
The article questions whether Trump will ultimately succeed in achieving the peace he dreams of, especially since he envisions economic solutions in the region—meaning peace that replaces wars with economic relations, job opportunities, and economic exchange that revitalizes Arab countries with the world. The main theme of President Trump’s meeting with some Arab and Muslim leaders was clearly ‘ending the war in Gaza’ and restoring life in the Middle East, which he described as beautiful and would be even more so without wars and conflicts.
His Majesty discussed with former Jordanian prime ministers the great convergence of views among Arab and Muslim leaders, especially regarding the Palestinian cause and the war in Gaza. The meeting also touched on the Israeli aggression on Qatar and the targeting of Hamas leaders there, emphasizing that this indicates terrorism in the region by force.
His Majesty also addressed current situations in some Arab countries such as Syria and Lebanon, affirming Jordan’s keenness to support effective efforts to maintain these countries’ sovereignty and stability. Jordan played a prominent role in the Syrian file during the rule of Bashar al-Assad and later during the transitional presidency of Ahmed al-Shara, including the ‘step-by-step’ meetings held in Amman and other Jordan-supported meetings to resolve the Syrian crisis.
Recently, Jordan played an important role in the Syrian file, especially during the conflict between Syrian Arab tribes and the Druze community in Sweida, where Jordan sought to resolve the crisis and calm the escalating situation exclusively in this file. He also pointed to the tense situation in Lebanon, particularly the state’s efforts to monopolize weapons exclusively in the hands of the army, which has not yet been resolved due to Hezbollah’s refusal to hand over its weapons. In 2024, Jordan provided military equipment to the Lebanese army to strengthen its role in maintaining order and stability.
Today, the most important file is the effort to end the war and suffering in Gaza. Jordan has played a crucial role in supporting and aiding the afflicted people in Gaza by sending Jordanian field hospitals and delivering humanitarian aid. It is hoped that these meetings, especially the one with Donald Trump on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly with leaders of Arab and Islamic countries, will succeed in achieving the very important outcomes, and that the supreme goal of the meeting—stopping the war in Gaza and establishing security and peace in the conflict-ridden Middle East—will be realized.
