White House officials said the United States and Israel are close to reaching an agreement on President Donald Trump’s plan to end the war in Gaza, with expectations of an announcement following his meeting later today, Monday, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The officials, according to the American site “Axios,” added that the gaps between the two sides have significantly narrowed after a lengthy meeting held on Sunday in New York between Netanyahu, U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, suggesting a joint announcement from Trump and Netanyahu after their meeting at the White House, which will include a lunch and a press conference.
Trump confirmed in an interview with “Axios” that his plan is “in its final stages” and that Netanyahu “is aligned with it,” although the latter’s public statements have been ambiguous.
White House advisers explained that if Netanyahu rejects the plan, he will bear responsibility for the continuation of the war and the empowerment of Hamas, at a time when the humanitarian needs of the Palestinians are worsening.
One of Trump’s advisers said, “The Arab countries have agreed to the plan 100%, and now we are waiting for President Netanyahu to be convinced.”
However, the plan still requires Hamas’s approval, and some of Trump’s aides see this initiative as a test of his international credibility, emphasizing that any progress in his Middle East agenda will remain pending unless he convinces Netanyahu to end the war.
Netanyahu faces internal pressure from his hard-right coalition partners to continue military operations, while dissatisfaction with his performance grows within circles close to Trump, with American officials describing his relationship with the president as burdened by disagreements and frustrations.
A White House official said Netanyahu is “very worried about his trial,” considering that this may explain his military hardline stance in the region, and that he now has to choose between Trump’s desire to end the war and the demands of his hardline allies.
In a move that upset some of Trump’s advisers, Netanyahu met on the sidelines of the United Nations meetings with American social media influencers, most of whom are Trump supporters, to rally their support through digital platforms, at a time when prominent figures like Tucker Carlson have escalated criticism, accusing Netanyahu of trying to influence Trump, which Netanyahu denied.
