The American newspaper “The Washington Post” revealed disagreements among Pentagon officials regarding the new defense strategy, with some considering it “short-sighted and ineffective” due to its excessive focus on internal threats at the expense of global challenges.

Officials involved in drafting the strategy spoke of a growing frustration towards a plan they see as narrow-minded and possibly irrelevant, especially given the highly personal and sometimes contradictory approach the president takes in foreign policy.

They said military personnel believe the new strategy overemphasizes internal threats at the expense of global challenges, and they are particularly concerned about narrowing the competition with China to only the Taiwan issue, while Beijing is undertaking a broad military modernization.

Two sources told the newspaper that the new strategy’s speech has a “more partisan” tone and accuses former President Joe Biden’s administration of weakening the military. The newspaper’s sources also pointed to concerns about Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s plan to restructure the armed forces, which is expected to include cuts of “800 generals and admirals overseeing the US armed forces.”

This comes as Hegseth ordered hundreds of senior military leaders to urgently convene a meeting in Virginia without disclosing the meeting’s topic, which President Donald Trump is expected to attend.
