The American site “Axios” reported that a plan to end the war in the Gaza Strip, presented by US President Donald Trump, underwent major changes introduced by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. These changes contradict the version previously approved by leaders of a group of Arab and Islamic countries during their meeting with Trump.
According to “Axios,” these amendments came as a result of a six-hour meeting last Sunday involving White House envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, along with Netanyahu and his close aide Ron Dermer.
The changes Netanyahu insisted on focused particularly on the conditions and timetable for the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.
Key Netanyahu Amendments:
- Linking withdrawal to Hamas disarmament: The changes tied Israel’s withdrawal from the Strip to progress in disarming Hamas, granting Tel Aviv a “veto” over the process.
- Unlimited presence in a “security zone”: The amendments stipulated that even if all conditions are met, including disarmament and the implementation of the three withdrawal phases, Israeli forces would remain in a security zone inside Gaza, effectively meaning an indefinite stay.
“Axios” noted that Qatari attempts to persuade the Trump administration not to release the detailed plan on Monday due to these changes failed, as the White House published the plan and urged Arab and Islamic countries to support it despite Netanyahu’s substantial amendments.
