The Trump administration on Wednesday requested the Supreme Court to issue an “expedited” ruling on its challenge against a Court of Appeals decision that declared the stringent tariffs imposed by the U.S. president unlawful, arguing that the tariffs harm sensitive ongoing trade negotiations.

The administration asked the Supreme Court to decide by September 10 whether it intends to hear the case, and if accepted, to hold hearings by early November.

Earlier, on Tuesday, Trump announced his administration would seek a swift Supreme Court ruling on the tariffs, which the Court of Appeals ruled unlawful last week.

The court ruling issued last Friday threatens to undermine Trump’s use of tariffs as a key economic policy tool. The court allowed the tariffs to remain in place until October 14, giving the Trump administration a chance to appeal to the Supreme Court.

When asked about the court ruling, Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that his administration would work to obtain a quick decision as early as Wednesday, “because we need an early ruling.”

The tariff policy is a cornerstone of Trump’s economic plans and is credited with bringing billions of dollars to the U.S. government.
