On September 1, 2025, the Federal Ministry of Health announced in its report that there is no chemical or radioactive contamination in Khartoum. Radiation measurements, conducted with devices accredited by the International Atomic Energy Agency, and chemical detection tests showed no abnormal indicators, and no cases of poisoning or mass fatalities were recorded. The report clarified that the symptoms widespread among citizens are due to common epidemic diseases such as cholera, malaria, and dengue fever, in addition to respiratory problems caused by fires and smoke. It emphasized that the main challenges are related to weak health infrastructure and the spread of epidemics, stressing the continuation of environmental and health monitoring, and confirming that Khartoum is safe for habitation.

However, this report is insufficient to reassure the public amid the prevailing climate of distrust between the people and the state and its institutions, and the report’s shortcomings. Although it mentioned the use of devices accredited by the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, these entities were neither involved nor invited to participate as neutral parties. Transparency requirements also demanded publishing the names of the technical teams that conducted the tests and details of their work.

Moreover, since the report came in the context of international accusations, there is an urgent need for a neutral international investigation or a fully credible national investigation. The report’s limitation to the capital raises questions: why were other suspected areas not included?

Even if we consider this report as an initial step to reassure citizens and confirm the ministry’s follow-up, it remains insufficient to dispel doubts amid the barrier of distrust, especially given the deficiencies noted, and the seriousness of the accusation and the severe consequences if proven otherwise.

Regarding the national committee announced in May, it is important that it includes independent international experts alongside local experts, that the names of committee members are announced, and that all measures are taken to enhance the credibility of the decision both internally and externally, reassuring the public.

Until this frightening accusation is resolved, it remains necessary for everyone, supporters and opponents alike, and away from political exploitation by any party, to demand and pressure the regime to expedite revealing the facts and dispel all doubts.
