US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he intends to hold talks about the war in Ukraine in the coming days, after his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska last month failed to achieve any breakthrough.

Trump expressed frustration over the ongoing fighting that erupted following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, noting that he had believed at the start of his term in January that ending the war would be much easier.

Trump told reporters at the White House during his meeting with Polish President Karol Nawrocki: “I have no message to send to Putin. He knows my position, and he will make his decision one way or another. And if we are not satisfied with that decision, you will see what happens.” The US president did not rule out imposing further sanctions on Moscow.

A White House official said Trump is expected to have a phone call on Thursday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The French presidency also stated that several European leaders, including Zelenskyy and French President Emmanuel Macron, will hold a joint call with Trump on Thursday.

This came after a video meeting hosted by France last week with about 30 countries to discuss ways to support Ukraine militarily if a peace agreement with Russia is reached, amid European criticism of Moscow’s cautious stance on negotiations.

Trump confirmed that the war will be resolved “one way or another,” but acknowledged the difficulty of the task, saying: “Sometimes you can’t predict war.”
