An open microphone on Wednesday revealed a private conversation about “immortality” and longevity between Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
An audio recording captured the two leaders speaking privately about the possibility of living up to 150 years during a military parade held in Beijing to mark Victory Day.
According to an audio broadcast by China’s CCTV, the leaders discussed the potential to achieve immortality through organ transplantation and advanced medical technologies.
Xi told Putin, as translated into Russian: “In the past, people rarely lived to 70, but today at seventy, you are still a child,” according to Politico magazine.
Putin responded: “With the development of biotechnology, human organs can be continuously transplanted, allowing a person to live younger and younger, and even achieve immortality.”
Xi added: “Expectations indicate that this century may give humans the chance to live up to 150 years.”
Putin later confirmed in a press conference that he discussed this topic with Xi on Wednesday.
When asked about the leaked conversation, Putin told reporters: “I think the president talked about it when we went to the parade.”
Putin continued: “Modern means to improve health, medical methods, and even surgical ones related to organ replacement, allow humanity to hope for an active life to continue differently than it is today,” Reuters reported.
China hosted many world leaders on Wednesday, including Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, at a military parade marking the 80th anniversary of Victory Day.
