The Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority (GCCIA) held a workshop yesterday at its headquarters in Dammam titled “Enhancing Security and Reducing Risks in Integrating Renewable Energy Sources,” with participation from a select group of leaders and experts from member states. This reflects the GCCIA’s leading role in supporting sustainable energy strategies for the Council countries.
The workshop was attended by Eng. Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed, Chairman of the Electricity and Water Authority of the Kingdom of Bahrain (EWA) and a board member of the GCCIA, Eng. Ahmed Al Ibrahim, CEO of the GCCIA, along with several executive leaders of the authority.
The workshop discussed mechanisms for integrating renewable energy sources into the Gulf power grids and reducing related operational risks, with participation from leaders, experts from member states, and international consultants.
Key topics included ensuring the reliability of power grids amid the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources, developing operational risk management mechanisms, enhancing the resilience of Gulf grids to face future challenges, and reviewing best global practices for safe and effective renewable energy integration.
Eng. Ahmed Al Ibrahim, CEO of the GCCIA, emphasized that integrating renewable energy sources into Gulf power grids is no longer optional but a strategic necessity for the region’s energy future. The authority is keen to adopt best global practices and innovate in developing policies and mechanisms that ensure sustainability, efficiency, and operational reliability, enhancing the Gulf grid’s flexibility and supporting the Council countries’ energy transition goals.
He added, “This workshop represents a practical step towards enhancing the system’s readiness to face future challenges and opening wider horizons for regional integration in the energy sector, achieving greater security and stability for national grids, and supporting the strategic objectives of the Gulf Cooperation Council’s visions in sustainable development and transition to a diversified economy based on clean energy.”
