Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed on Wednesday to continue fighting and achieve his objectives “militarily” if no settlement is reached, while U.S. President Donald Trump hinted at imposing new sanctions on Moscow if it does not seek peace in Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he saw no signs of Moscow’s desire to stop the war, while French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed Europe’s readiness to provide security guarantees to Ukraine once a peace agreement is signed.
Putin told reporters in Beijing, “I believe there is a light at the end of the tunnel… Let’s see how the situation develops. If that (an agreement) does not happen, we must resolve all our issues militarily.” His remarks came after attending a massive military parade alongside Chinese President Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
He added that Russian forces “are advancing on all fronts,” considering that Ukrainian forces lack the capabilities to carry out major offensive operations and are only trying to hold their positions. Putin renewed his challenge to Zelensky’s legitimacy, calling him the “head of the Ukrainian administration,” while confirming his readiness to meet him, saying, “If Zelensky is ready, let him come to Moscow.”
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced that Russia seeks international recognition of the Ukrainian territories it annexed as part of its own to ensure “lasting” peace.
Trump expressed disappointment with Putin’s stance on the war in Ukraine, hinting at his administration’s intention to take steps to reduce human losses there. He said in a radio interview that he feels “very disappointed with President Putin,” affirming that Washington “will do something to help save lives,” and in other remarks from the Oval Office, Trump indicated the possibility of imposing new sanctions on Moscow if it does not show seriousness in pursuing peace.
Zelensky said he sees no signs of Russia’s willingness to stop the war during his meeting with Macron in Paris, expressing confidence that the U.S. and European countries will support Kyiv in “increasing pressure on Russia to move towards a diplomatic solution.”
Macron confirmed that Europe is ready to provide security guarantees to Ukraine once a peace agreement ending the war is signed, adding that the details of the guarantees are “very confidential” but “preparations have been completed” in a meeting of defense ministers held earlier.
During his visit to Copenhagen, Zelensky said he hopes to speak with Trump to push for new sanctions on Russia, noting “indications” from the U.S. that it would support this move. He also spoke of a “solid basis” for security guarantees for Ukraine if a ceasefire with Russia is reached.
On the ground, Ukrainian authorities said Russia launched a sweeping air attack on Ukraine, injuring at least four railway workers and damaging infrastructure. Air raid sirens sounded for hours across nine of Ukraine’s 24 regions, from the capital Kyiv to Lviv and Volyn in the west.
The Ukrainian Air Force said it shot down 430 out of 502 drones and 21 out of 24 missiles launched by Russia overnight, adding that three missiles and 69 drones hit 14 sites.
