Exciting developments in the case of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
According to the New York Post, the new video of “the missing minute” contradicts the explanation provided by the US Department of Justice during President Donald Trump’s administration.
The surveillance footage was among more than 33,000 pages of documents and videos related to the investigation into Epstein’s sex trafficking network, released by the House Oversight Committee on Tuesday evening.
In the initial leak of Epstein’s files from the Department of Justice, an 11-hour recording outside his cell complex at the Metropolitan Correctional Center on the night of his 2019 suicide lacked one minute just before midnight. Critics quickly speculated that the missing footage — between 11:58:59 PM on August 9 and midnight on August 10 — indicated some form of political cover-up regarding Epstein’s death.
At the time, Attorney General Pam Bondi downplayed concerns of a wider conspiracy, stating that the last minute of footage is deleted every night by the prison office when cameras are rebooted.
The new footage appears to show the camera data switching at midnight, resulting in the merging of two clips.
Nothing happened during the previously missing minute recorded outside the cell complex, and the reason for the absence of that minute in the initial recording was not immediately clear. Bondi has yet to comment on her earlier explanation.
The Epstein case has caused a “political headache” for President Trump in recent weeks after many of his supporters embraced a flood of conspiracy theories about a possible cover-up of the convicted sex offender’s death. Trump repeatedly tried to downplay this “storm,” saying he was puzzled by the investigation files.
The files, recently published on the Google Drive platform, contained court documents and other previously disclosed information in the case.
The document release relates to investigations into Epstein, who committed suicide while facing charges of sexually abusing underage girls, and his former associate Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving a lengthy prison sentence for aiding him.
Following the document release, Representative Robert Garcia (D-California), the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, criticized Republicans on the committee for issuing materials he said were almost entirely publicly available information.
Garcia said in a statement: “The 33,000 pages of Epstein documents that James Comer decided to ‘release’ were mostly already public information. To the American people – don’t be fooled by this.”
Meanwhile, Representatives Ro Khanna (D-California) and Thomas Massie (R-Kentucky) proposed a measure that would require the Department of Justice to release all its non-classified records related to Epstein, including those held by the FBI and federal prosecutors.
