The French National Assembly website published the details of a petition prepared by Thibault Manier calling for the resignation of President Emmanuel Macron, accusing him of “serious international commitments” and “irresponsible foreign policy.”

Manier pointed out that Macron’s statements regarding Russia and the Ukraine conflict represent “a serious escalation that could lead to France’s direct involvement in a major conflict.”

The president’s positions have also faced criticism, including his readiness to send European forces to Ukraine and authorize strikes on Russian territory using French missiles.

The petition text states: “These irresponsible statements expose France to the risk of retaliatory measures and increase the danger of a full-scale European conflict. They reflect a chaotic management of foreign policy that threatens the security of the French people.”

Additionally, Macron has been criticized for abusing his powers, which enabled him to pass the controversial “pension reform law” and concentrate power in the hands of his close circle.

The National Assembly can decide to hold public discussions on the petition if it gathers at least 500,000 signatures from at least 30 departments or overseas territories.

Macron has previously stated that he does not intend to resign before the end of his presidential term. A confidence vote in the government will be held in an extraordinary parliamentary session on September 8 amid public discontent over austerity measures proposed in the 2026 budget bill. Major opposition parties have already announced their intention to withdraw confidence from the cabinet.
