Palestinian Vice President Hussein Al-Sheikh arrived in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Sunday for an official visit during which he will hold talks on the developments of the Palestinian cause and efforts to stop the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip.
The official Palestinian news agency WAFA stated that Al-Sheikh, who also serves as Deputy Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, aims through his visit to “conduct consultations and coordinate positions with the Saudi leadership.”
During his visit, Al-Sheikh is scheduled to discuss several political files of common interest, most notably the developments of the Palestinian cause, efforts to stop the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people, the upcoming developments regarding the recognition of the Palestinian state in the coming September, in addition to ways to strengthen the unified Arab position to face current regional and international challenges, according to the agency.
The visit comes “within the framework of continuous communication between the State of Palestine and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and ongoing coordination to support the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them the right to establish their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital,” according to the same source.
The agency did not mention the officials Al-Sheikh will meet or the meetings he will hold.
On Friday, Washington announced the cancellation of entry visas for several Palestinian officials, including Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, and prevented them from participating in the United Nations General Assembly meetings scheduled for September, a move that comes as several Western countries prepare to recognize the State of Palestine.
Several Western countries, including France and the United Kingdom, have previously announced their intention to recognize the Palestinian state during the United Nations General Assembly meetings in September.
With American support, Israel has been committing a genocide in Gaza since October 7, 2023, including killing, starving, destruction, and forced displacement, ignoring all international calls and orders from the International Court of Justice to stop.
The Israeli genocide has resulted in 63,459 Palestinian martyrs, 160,256 injured, most of whom are children and women, more than 9,000 missing, hundreds of thousands displaced, and famine that killed 339 Palestinians including 124 children, as of Sunday.
Alongside the genocide war, the Israeli army and settlers in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, have killed at least 1,016 Palestinians, injured about 7,000 others, and arrested more than 18,500, according to Palestinian data.
