The Israeli government has approved a ceasefire decision in the Gaza Strip.
According to the newspaper, Marwan Barghouti, Ahmed Saadat, Abbas Al-Sayed, and Hassan Salama—four “key cards” demanded by Hamas—will not be released in the deal.
Israeli sources indicate that six Palestinian leaders, among a broader list of 50 Palestinian prisoners, have been placed under a “big veto” by Israel, meaning a firm refusal to release them under any demand.
1. Marwan Barghouti – Symbol of Fatah Movement
A prominent leader in Fatah and former member of the Palestinian Legislative Council, widely seen as a potential successor to President Mahmoud Abbas. He was arrested in 2002 during the West Bank incursion and sentenced to five life sentences plus 40 years for leading the “Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades” and carrying out attacks during the Second Intifada that killed five Israelis.
Despite his imprisonment, Barghouti retains high national status and earned a PhD while in prison. He was recently visited by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir in a visit described as “provocative,” during which he threatened him, saying: “Whoever messes with Israel, we will erase him.”
2. Ahmed Saadat – Secretary-General of the Popular Front
Leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, arrested after the assassination of Israeli Tourism Minister Rehavam Ze’evi in 2001. Initially transferred to Jericho prison under US-British supervision, but Israel stormed the prison in 2006 and arrested him.
He was sentenced to 30 years and is considered the highest-ranking Palestinian leader in Israeli prisons. Although not affiliated with Hamas, Palestinian factions demand his release as part of any comprehensive national deal.
3. Abbas Al-Sayed – Commander of Al-Qassam Brigades in Tulkarm
Israel accuses him of carrying out the 2002 Park Hotel attack in Netanya, which killed 35 Israelis. He was sentenced to 35 life sentences and is considered one of the most prominent resistance leaders whom Israel refuses to release.
4. Ibrahim Hamid – “The Military Mind of Hamas in the West Bank”
Considered by the occupation as the “most dangerous prisoner,” accused of leading Hamas’s military wing in the West Bank during the Second Intifada and planning major attacks such as the Sheffield attack in Rishon LeZion (15 killed) and the Hebrew University attack (9 killed).
He was sentenced to 54 life sentences after being accused of killing 46 Israelis. His release was rejected in the Shalit deal despite repeated Hamas demands.
5. Abdullah Barghouti – “The Engineer of the Resistance”
Nicknamed “Hamas’s engineer,” he is a prominent explosives expert in the military wing of the movement. Israel holds him responsible for dozens of attacks that killed 66 Israelis and injured about 500 others, including attacks on the Sbarro restaurant and Moment café in Jerusalem.
6. Hassan Salama – One of the Founders of Al-Qassam Brigades
One of the veteran leaders of Al-Qassam Brigades, born in Khan Younis, responsible for a series of retaliatory operations after the assassination of engineer Yahya Ayyash.
Israel holds him responsible for the Road 18 attacks in Jerusalem, which killed 45 Israelis, and the Ashkelon junction attack in 1996.
He was sentenced to 46 life sentences and recently published his book “Burning Buses” from inside prison, which angered the occupation.
