Tom Fletcher, the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, described the ceasefire agreement in Gaza as a “genuine diplomatic breakthrough,” emphasizing that the next step is to turn this political breakthrough into “concrete action” on the ground to meet the massive humanitarian needs.

In a televised statement to “Cairo News,” he praised the diplomatic efforts that led to the agreement, saying, “I want to commend President Trump, President Sisi, and all the negotiators in the region who made this possible.”

He continued, “Civilians in Gaza have suffered for a long time and waited a lot, and now it is time to act generously and on a large scale because the people’s needs are enormous, especially with the spread of famine.”

He considered that “seeing the people of Gaza return to their homes and start anew is a wonderful example of human resilience in the face of death, destruction, and displacement.”

At the same time, he expressed deep sorrow over the scale of the disaster, saying, “You can’t help but feel sadness when you see the extent of this destruction, and people setting up tents on the ruins of entire cities turned to rubble,” stressing that “there is a massive reconstruction task, and we must stand by them at this stage.”
