Indian legendary actor and bodybuilder Varinder Singh Ghuman, “Mr. India 2009” and runner-up of the “Mr. Asia” competition, died at the age of 42 due to a heart attack.
According to reports, Ghuman suffered a heart attack while receiving treatment in the hospital for a shoulder injury, leading to his tragic death last Thursday.
Fortis Escorts Hospital issued a statement regarding the incident, stating: “Varinder Singh Ghuman was evaluated at the outpatient clinic on October 6 due to pain and restricted movement in his right shoulder.”
It continued: “After clinical evaluation, a rotator cuff repair with biceps tendon fixation was recommended. The patient had no known chronic illnesses. Around 3:35 PM, the patient experienced a sudden cardiac arrhythmia, and immediately, the anesthesia, cardiology, cardiac anesthesia, and intensive care teams began advanced resuscitation procedures.”
The statement added: “Despite continuous and coordinated efforts, the team was unable to revive the patient, and death was declared at 5:36 PM.”
Ghuman, who was from Gurdaspur, India, was considered one of the world’s first professional vegetarian bodybuilders after his success more than a decade ago.
He won the “Mr. India” title in 2009, then became runner-up in the “Mr. Asia” competition, and represented India in many international bodybuilding contests worldwide.
His achievements in the sport earned him recognition from global figures such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, who later recruited him to promote his health products in Asia.
Beyond bodybuilding, Ghuman acted in several films between 2012 and 2023, his last role being “Shakil” in the film “Tiger 3.”
This tragic news comes amid a series of deaths among bodybuilders, with at least six other athletes passing away in the past six months.
In late July, Spanish bodybuilding star Lorena Blanco died at the age of 37, suspected to be from a heart attack, while preparing to travel to Las Vegas to participate in the “Miss Olympia” competition.
