German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius expressed his support for increasing the German military’s involvement in countering dangerous drones.
During his meeting with his Swiss counterpart, Federal Council member Martin Pfister, Pistorius said in Berlin on Thursday that the first step should be the cooperation of federal police and state police forces with the German military to establish a clear picture of the situation.
The minister, a member of the Social Democratic Party, added: “I also think it makes sense to involve the military more – within the framework of administrative assistance, of course. But it is also certain, contrary to sometimes given impressions, that there is no confusion about competencies within Germany. The responsibilities of each party and their respective areas are completely clear.”
The German government plans to amend the Aviation Security Act after a previous coalition government project under Chancellor Olaf Scholz failed due to the early collapse of the ruling coalition.
Pistorius explained that the new draft also concerns military participation through administrative assistance, emphasizing the need to clearly distinguish this from expanding powers, noting that any substantial expansion of these powers (related to the military) would require a constitutional amendment.
Meanwhile, the Swiss minister said drones also pose a threat to Switzerland’s security, pointing out that this threat could affect his country as an advanced nation with sensitive infrastructure, similar to other European countries.
Pfister said: “We will have to coordinate the situation closely with our neighbors because such dangers cannot be dealt with only at the domestic level but must be viewed in a broader context, within a general European framework.”
