UNIFIL published a statement on its website about an “attack on peacekeepers during obstacle removal” stating:
“Israeli army drones dropped four bombs near UNIFIL peacekeepers yesterday morning while they were working to remove obstacles blocking access to a UN site near the Blue Line.”
It added: “This attack is one of the most serious against UNIFIL personnel and property since the ceasefire agreement last November.”
It continued: “One bomb fell 20 meters away, and three other bombs fell about 100 meters from UN personnel and vehicles. The drones were seen returning south of the Blue Line.”
It said: “The Israeli army had been previously informed about UNIFIL’s work removing obstacles in the area southeast of the town of Marwahin. To ensure the safety of peacekeepers after the incident, the work being carried out yesterday was suspended.”
It concluded: “Any actions that endanger UN peacekeepers and their property, or interfere with their assigned tasks, are unacceptable and represent a serious violation of Resolution 1701 and international law. The Israeli army is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of the peacekeepers carrying out the tasks assigned by the Security Council.”
