US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu meet today, Monday, at the White House to discuss the latest US-backed plans for Gaza after the war, hoping to pave the way to end the two-year-long conflict, according to The New York Times.
This will be the fourth meeting between Trump and Netanyahu since the former returned to the White House last January. Both have raised hopes for a ceasefire, but neither has decisively ended the fighting.
This time, Trump and Netanyahu meet amid international efforts to develop specific proposals for governing Gaza after the war ends. The Trump administration is considering an idea proposed by former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, while France and several Arab governments have presented their own plans.
The meeting comes after a week in which Israel’s international isolation deepened, following France, Britain, and several European countries recognizing the Palestinian state.
Trump, who has been a champion for Israel, expressed impatience over the ongoing war entering its third year next month. He also said he would not allow Israel to annex parts of the occupied West Bank, which Palestinians hope will be part of their future state.
US Vice President J.D. Vance said on Sunday that “complex negotiations” are underway between Arab leaders, Israel, and the Trump administration. While cautiously optimistic about progress, Vance added that the agreement could “be derailed at the last moment.”
On Sunday, Netanyahu expressed hope that Israel could “agree” to Trump’s proposal. In an interview with Fox News, he said, “We are working on it; nothing is decided yet.”
He hinted that Israel would be willing to grant amnesty to Hamas members if they end the war and release hostages.
A delegation of Israeli settler leaders in the US sought to meet Netanyahu on Sunday to pressure him to defy Trump’s warning about annexation. Along with other right-wing Israelis, they pushed Israel to annex the area after several European countries recognized a Palestinian state last week.
Nadav Stroehler, Netanyahu’s former advisor and Israeli political analyst, said the Prime Minister is already looking ahead to the upcoming elections expected next year. He said this might give Netanyahu an incentive to accept Trump’s proposal and “end” the war on Gaza, even if it upsets his government and provokes some violent right-wing backlash. Stroehler said, “He is looking for a way out of this situation. Perhaps this is the formula that enables him to do so.”
Meanwhile, CNN reported that despite Trump’s statements about a possible agreement to end the Gaza war, the proposal presents a political dilemma for Netanyahu. As much as the region has shifted, Netanyahu has also changed, and this shift in approach makes it very difficult to predict what comes next.
For years, Netanyahu’s war approach involved brief, containable conflicts, especially in Gaza, such as the eight-day war in 2012. But the current Gaza war will enter its second year next month, the longest in Israel’s history.
When he returned to power in 2009, Netanyahu declared one of his goals was to eliminate Hamas. But in practice, despite his rhetoric, Netanyahu’s security policy was widely seen as cautious and restrained, with some political opponents calling him cowardly and mocking his inability to take decisive steps. After October 7, Netanyahu promised Israelis he would change the Middle East. This time, he meant it.
Analysts who previously expected caution are now dealing with a new reality. Netanyahu, who previously avoided long wars and ground operations, aware of the political cost and the price of inconclusive results or stalemate, is now following this approach despite his army’s warnings.
However, recent optimistic remarks by Trump about an imminent agreement to end the fighting may indicate that Netanyahu will soon be forced to accept the new status quo — a situation that could halt the Israeli Prime Minister’s attempt to build a legacy through military aggression and instead force him to face his political calculations.
