European team players celebrate winning the Ryder Cup
DP World Tour players led Team Europe to win the Ryder Cup for the second consecutive time, defeating the United States team in the competition considered the biggest and most intense in golf history between the two continents. The event is held once every two years and has a 98-year history.
Team Europe, led by Rory McIlroy, the leader of the “Race to Dubai” ranking, successfully retained the title they also won in 2023. They triumphed over the American team, which hosted the competition on its home ground and in front of its fans at the Bethpage Black course in New York, winning with a total score of 15 to 13 at the end of the 28 singles and doubles matches that concluded early Monday after three days of intense competition.
This marks the first time in 13 years that Team Europe has won the Ryder Cup on foreign soil, overcoming a remarkable comeback attempt by the United States team on the final day, which held the breath of the large crowd in attendance.
Luke Donald, the captain of Team Europe, received the Ryder Cup trophy, becoming the second European captain to win this title twice consecutively. He said: “The last 12 hours were the most exhausting of my life on the final day. Kudos to the American team; I knew it would be tough. I didn’t expect them to be this tough as they fought hard, but this means a lot to me and the team. We came here knowing the task was very difficult. I can only be very proud of these men, what they went through, how they came together, how they play for history, and how they play for those who came before them. Now their memory will be immortalized for generations to come.”
Team Europe included a selection of the top DP World Tour stars, led by Rory McIlroy, six-time Race to Dubai champion and close to his seventh title this season; Tommy Fleetwood, UAE resident and two-time Abu Dhabi HSBC champion; Matt Fitzpatrick, two-time DP World Tour winner in Dubai; Shane Lowry, 2019 Abu Dhabi HSBC champion; Tyrrell Hatton, winner of this year’s Hero Dubai Desert Classic; and other successful international players including Jon Rahm, Robert MacIntyre, Rasmus Højgaard, Viktor Hovland, Sepp Straka, and Justin Rose.
With the conclusion of the Ryder Cup, the DP World Tour competitions resume with only four tournaments left before finalizing the list of the top 70 qualifiers in the Race to Dubai ranking to qualify for the final playoffs held in the UAE. The first is the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship at Yas Links Club from November 6 to 9, followed by the DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates from November 13 to 16, where the top 50 players qualify.
