Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu – wanted by international justice – confirmed that he did not agree to the establishment of a Palestinian state during his talks with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House.
Netanyahu added in a video posted Tuesday night on his Telegram account, “No, absolutely not, that was not part of the agreement, and we made it very clear that we strongly oppose a Palestinian state.”
Yesterday, Monday, Netanyahu announced at a joint press conference with the U.S. president that he supports Trump’s plan regarding the Gaza Strip, adding that Israel will “complete the mission” if Hamas rejects the plan.
The plan published by the White House, consisting of 20 points, stated: “As Gaza’s redevelopment progresses, and when the Palestinian Authority reform program is properly implemented, conditions may finally be ready for a reliable path toward Palestinian self-determination and statehood, which we recognize as an aspiration of the Palestinian people.”
Netanyahu claimed he succeeded in isolating the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and made the entire world pressure the movement to accept Israeli conditions to stop the war in Gaza while the army remains in most of the territory.
During his press conference on Monday, Trump said many allies “have foolishly recognized the Palestinian state, but in my opinion, they do so because they are tired of what is happening.”
The proposal points to the possibility of establishing a Palestinian state behind a thick wall of ambiguity, conditions, and restrictions.
Last Friday, Netanyahu said in his speech to the United Nations General Assembly that the establishment of a Palestinian state would be “suicide” for the Israeli state, renewing his condemnation of Western countries recognizing the State of Palestine.
He added, “This is another message to Western leaders: Israel will not allow you to impose a terrorist state on us. We will not commit national suicide because you lack the courage to confront hostile media and anti-Semitic crowds demanding Israel’s blood.”
In Israeli reactions to Trump’s plan, opposition leader Yair Lapid said the peace proposal was presented a year and a half ago, when hostages, soldiers, and thousands of wounded could have been saved.
Meanwhile, Israeli Democratic Party leader Yair Golan expressed hope that the plan to end the conflict in Gaza would be implemented, that hostages would return home, and that this political war would end.
He said the agreement has been on the table for over a year and should have been signed long ago, stressing that the war has not served a security purpose for some time.
He pointed out that Netanyahu postponed this agreement for political reasons and that he owes an apology to the hostages, their families, bereaved families, and all Israeli citizens for all the bloodshed and suffering caused.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced details of his new plan to end the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip on Monday evening, promising that the area would become “free of extremism and terrorism” and would not pose a threat to its neighbors, according to his statements.
Trump confirmed that the initiative aims for a permanent ceasefire and regional stabilization, saying in a White House press conference, “This plan aims to give Gaza’s residents peace and prosperity without forcing anyone to leave their home,” urging involved parties to approach it “responsibly and realistically.”
Meanwhile, Hamas announced it would study the plan responsibly, stressing its priority is “lifting the siege, stopping aggression, and ensuring the rights of the Palestinian people.”
